Biography
I’ve been a professional singer for 30 years and love the focus Nia gives me of my sensations in my body. It has actually improved my singing, as I’ve learned about what aspects of my mind influence my physical ability.
20 years of practising many types of yoga gave me a great grounding in alignment and improved strength and flexibility. For me starting to learn, and even more so teach Nia for just over 10 years, I learn more to integrate alignment and flexibility, with powerful explosive movement, balanced with gentle self-determined flowing and spiralling based on what my body in the moment is seeking.
In Nia, you may develop a deeper understanding of your body’s functional health, starting from your bare feet up. You may become more alert, more perceptive to your surrounds. You may learn to unfurl small restrictions in your body and also in your mind that help your nervous system.
Music, and dance have been found to prevent brain degenerative issues. https://www.nia.nih.gov/news/could-musical-medicine-influence-healthy-aging

Music, and dance have also been found to aid emotional and mental difficulties like depression and anxiety. https://www.sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2024/02/12/dancing-may-be-better-than-other-exercise-for-improving-mental-h.html
But most importantly, dance is fun. It is our natural response to good music and good beats, and we have lots of that in every Nia class.

Monday morning elders class at Kalyra Village (message me for details 0409-100-385) $5. This is slow, more focussed on the function of each part of your body, and more explanation of your body and brain connection. We also do the ‘slow walk’, which is a laser focus on using your whole body to slow down, and break down the parts to walk in a powerful stable way. This simple practise can transform your understanding of your abilities. It is simple. And is the most incredible base for all your Nia movement.

Classic Nia is being shared at the Bridgewater Community Hall every Thursday, 9:00am-10:00am. We’re a relaxed group of movers enjoying the gifts that Nia brings to our body, mind and spirit. Nia fitness is set to great music with elements of dance, martial arts and meditation. It brings a great balance of feeling stronger, fitter, and also more ‘zen’. In a typical class you will dance to the music, learn about functional movement with kicks, blocks and punches, and explore your sensory inner world as you pay attention to the movement of your hands, bare feet, and pay closer attention to the personalised experience and joy of your body in motion.
Gentle Nia classes are held at Kalyra Village Monday mornings, where we break down the movements, go a little slower. More focus on stability, and the engagement of all muscles to support active, balanced bodies, and greater mental focus.
